Foster hits late 3 to lift Creighton over DePaul

CHICAGO, Ill. — Marcus Foster‘s three-pointer 14.4 seconds left proved to be the difference as Creighton overcame a 10-point deficit to post a 76-75 win at DePaul on Wednesday. The bucket gave Foster exactly 2,000 points in his college career, including 1,125 points at Creighton.

Creighton improved to 18-6 with the win and is 8-4 in BIG EAST play after its seventh straight win over DePaul.  DePaul fell to 9-14 and is 2-9 in league play.

Creighton took an early 9-5 lead after seven straight points from Foster and the Jays led 14-11 before a pair of dunks by Max Strus kick-started a 9-0 Blue Demons run that gave DePaul the lead for the rest of the half.  The Bluejays battled foul trouble throughout the opening 20 minutes, as Khyri ThomasRonnie Harrell Jr. and Toby Hegner each had two first half fouls to contribute to DePaul’s 6-for-11 marksmanship at the line before the break. DePaul led 36-31 at intermission behind eight points off the bench by Justin Roberts, including a pair of three-pointers.

Thomas led CU with 11 points in the first half, while Foster added 10. The Bluejays had a 12-2 lead in fast break points before the break, but were outrebounded 20-15 and had 10 turnovers.

CU wasted no time in the second half to cut into the Blue Demons lead, using a 10-4 run out of the gates to take a 41-40 lead on Foster’s fourth dunk of the evening. It gave the Bluejays their first lead since 14-13 in the game’s seventh minute.

DePaul would retake a 55-50 lead before Tyler Clement highlighted a Bluejay flurry with back-to-back three-pointers to make it 62-59, and a lay-up by Mitch Ballock forced a Blue Demons timeout with 6:38 left and CU leading 66-61.

But DePaul had one more run left in them. Martin Maric scored at the rim to give DePaul a 75-73 lead with 1:04 left. The Bluejays would miss a shot but Thomas grabbed the rebound and was tied up. The arrow went to CU and Foster would be stripped driving to the lane with 40.1 left. Foster would miss a shot but Hegner hustled to chase down the rebound and get it back to Foster, who drained his fourth career game-winner with 14.4 left.

After a timeout with 10.6 seconds left, DePaul found leading scorer Max Strus, but he would turn it over in the final seconds as Hegner stole the ball and ran out the clock.

Foster led all players with 29 points, making 5-of-8 three-pointers in the contest. Ronnie Harrell Jr. had 10 points, eight rebounds and five assists and Thomas finished with 18 points. Creighton shot 30-of-62 for the night, including 12-of-29 from three-point territory. Creighton had a 18-2 lead in fast break points.

DePaul was led by 23 points from Marin Maric, who made 10-of-16 field goal attempts. Eli Cain added 18 points and six assists for the hosts. DePaul shot 46.7 percent for the night and outrebounded CU 38-33.

Creighton returns to action on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. when it hosts No. 5 Xavier (22-3, 10-2 BIG EAST).
