CRETE – A strong second half propelled the Fillmore Central girls basketball team into next week’s state tournament in Lincoln. The Panthers defeated Freeman 54-34 in the C2-3 district championship game Friday night at Crete High School, clinching their first trip to state since 2013.
Although Fillmore Central never trailed in the game, they could only muster 18 first half points against a determined Falcon defense, and led just 18-14 at halftime. But the Panthers exploded for 21 points in the decisive third period, as their balanced, high-scoring offense finally shifted into gear. They led 39-25 after three quarters, and cruised to the big victory with 15 more points in the final stanza.
Fillmore Central, now 22-4 on the season, had a very balanced attack in the contest. Erin Schmidt led the way with 12 points, including nine in the second half. Jacquelyn Schelkopf scored 11, Halle Theis added 9, Abby Nichols 8, and Lexi Theis and Macy Scott scored 7 apiece.
Freeman, who finished the season 16-11, was led by Brylie Hartwig and Macy Holland, who each scored 8 points.
