Fillmore Central loses in C2 semifinals
RRN/Fillmore Central vs. Crofton
The Fillmore Central girls basketball team’s quest for a state championship came to an abrupt end Friday afternoon at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln. The Panthers ran into Lacey Sprakel and her Crofton Warrior teammates, and ended up on the short end of a 63-44 score.
Sprakel, a 5-9 sophomore, almost single-handedly beat the Panthers, as she scored at will against Fillmore Central. She had 10 points in the first quarter, and 18 by halftime, enroute to a game high 28 points.
Crofton jumped out to an early lead, but FC woke up midway through the first period, caught the Warriors, and had a brief 15-13 lead before Crofton went on a 12-0 run and by halftime held a 38-28 lead.
Two early third quarter baskets by Sprakel dashed any hopes of a Panther comeback, and Crofton continued to pull away, leading 56-37 after three quarters, and going on to the lopsided win.
Crofton, now 23-3 on the season, will play Hasting St. Cecilia on Saturday for the state title. The Panthers, 23-5, who were led in scoring by sophomore Jacquelyn Schelkopf’s 12 points, will play Oakland-Craig in the third-place game Saturday at 9am at Lincoln Southeast High School.
