The Briar Cliff volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-22) to No. 9 Dordt Wednesday evening. The Chargers slipped to 7-6 overall and 1-2 in the GPAC, while the Defenders improved to 10-3 and 2-1 in conference play.
Dordt controlled the match by outhitting the Cliff (.316-.165) and earning better attack percentages in all three sets. The Defenders outhit the Chargers .323-.194 in set one, .333-.132 in set two and .294-.176 in the final set. Dordt led the statistical categories of kills (42-32), assists (36-28), digs (50-36) and blocks (13-5).
Courtney Schafer led the Cliff in kills with 13 and hit an eye-popping .440. Laura Barryaccumulated 17 assists in the match and Breanne Hankins led the Chargers defensively with 13 digs. Megan Lee had the lone service ace for the Blue and Gold to go along with six digs.Emily Sanburg scored three blocks in the contest.
Joscelyn Wind was the top hitter for the Defenders with 10 kills, followed by Julia Lindbergh and Haley Moss with seven apiece. Jamie Gesink notched 30 assists and nine digs. Defensively, the Defenders were led by Gesink, Summer Jansen and Jill Schouten each with nine digs. Wind piled up five blocks at the net.
The Chargers will now turn their attention to the No. 17 Doane Tigers. Briar Cliff will host Doane on Saturday, Sept. 24 in the Newman Flanagan Center. The match is set to begin at 3 p.m.
