DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowa State (28-22, 4-11 Big 12) fell by a score of 6-5 in extra innings to Drake (37-14, 21-2 MVC) on Wednesday night at Buel Field. Senior Sydney Stites went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI on the night, but it was not enough to push the Cyclones past the Bulldogs.
Drake 6, Iowa State 5
Drake got on the board in its first opportunity at the plate, as Taryn Pena hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to put the Cyclones in an early 2-0 hole.
Stites helped the Cyclones rally, collecting a lead-off base hit in the top of the second, followed by back-to-back walks for Logan Schaben and Kasey Simpson to load the bases. Sami Williams and Kaylee Bosworth then came through in succession and collected a pair of RBI base hits, tying the game at 2-2 before Drake could work its way out of trouble.
Stites was back at it in the ensuing inning, crushing a two-run home run in the top of the third to give Iowa State its first lead of the night. It was the senior’s fifth home run of the season, and second in the last four games.
Drake scored two runs on three hits, including a two-RBI single to right field by Sarah Maddox, to knot the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the fourth.
Kaylee Bosworth collected Iowa State’s sixth walk of the day in the top of the fourth, followed by a single for Talyn Lewis. The duo eventually advanced to second and third on a wild pitch before Stites came to the plate and collected her third RBI of the day on a base hit through the left side, scoring Bosworth to give ISU a 5-4 advantage.
Drake tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the fifth, as Nicole Newman collected an RBI on a ground out, scoring Macy Johnson. The Bulldogs would then walk the game off on a solo home run by Maddox in the home half of the eighth inning, giving Drake the 6-5 victory.
The Cyclones return home to wrap up the regular season with a three-game series vs. Kansas at the Cyclone Sports Complex. The series begins on Friday at 4 p.m.
