In his Iowa State debut, Michael Jacobson led the Cyclones in scoring. The Waukee, Iowa native rattled home a career-high 17 points on 7-9 shooting. He also pulled in a team-high seven rebounds.
How It Happened
It was all about the ISU newcomers on opening night. Marial Shayok scored 14 points on 7-10 shooting. He was active on the boards, collecting six on the night. Tyrese Haliburton was also into double figures in his first Iowa State appearance. He scored 12 points on the night and connected on 2-3 attempts from deep.
In the middle of the second half, Iowa State extended its lead with a 12-0 run, with 10 of those 12 points coming from freshmen Haliburton and George Conditt IV. Conditt finished the night with five points and four blocks.
Iowa State’s defense was great all night. The Cyclones forced 20 Hornet turnovers, 12 of which came off ISU steals. ASU shot just 20-55 from the field and 9-26 from three.
Iowa State jumped out to a 36-23 lead at the break. Shayok led the Cyclone scoring effort in the first half. He was 5-7, including a perfect 2-2 from downtown. He tallied 12 first-half points, while dishing out two assists and bringing down two boards.
