Creighton Women nip Xavier on road

Cincinnati, Ohio — Trailing 42-31 with just over eight minutes remaining, the Creighton women’s basketball team scored 22 points in the fourth quarter to upend Xavier, 53-52 on Sunday afternoon at the Cintas Center.

Junior Olivia Elger capped the comeback as the Illinois native scored the final five points of the game, including a long jumper with 30 seconds to play that proved to be the difference. While Elger hit the shot, freshman Rachael Saunders secured the win with a block on the Musketeers’ final possession to seal the victory.

Creighton improved to 6-9 in BIG EAST play and 12-14 overall, while Xavier dropped to 11-14 overall and 2-12 in league play.

Senior Jade Owens shined for the Bluejays in the opening period, scoring the Bluejays first six points. The only other buckets of the frame came from Saunders and a trey by sophomore Temi Carda as Creighton trailed 12-11 after one.

Owens dropped in the opening basket of the second to push Creighton in front 13-11, but an 8-0 run from the Musketeers tipped the scales back to Xavier. Down 27-20 in the closing seconds, Carda knocked down a jumper at the buzzer to get the Bluejays within five (27-22) at the break.

Creighton was frigid in the third, hitting just three of 11 shots (27%), yet Xavier led just 41-31 entering the final ten minutes.

Down 43-31 with 8:07 showing on the clock, sophomore Tatum Rembao started a 15-2 charge over the next five minutes with a jumper from the wing. Saunders followed with a drive to the rim, then Rembao notched a layup to make it 43-37 (6:11). Xavier tried to stop the run with a bucket by A’riana Gray, but back-to-back three-balls from Carda and Owens made it a one possession game at 45-43 with four minutes left.

Another Xavier miss opened the door for Creighton and Carda came sprinting through with a traditional three point play for the Bluejays first lead since the second quarter. Xavier rallied to lead 52-48 with 1:37 remaining, setting the stage for Elger to shine.

The Bluejays shot 60 percent from the field in the fourth quarter and held Xavier to only two field goals during the final 10 minutes of play.

Carda led Creighton with 18 points on 7-of-12 from the field, while Owens had 11 points. Xavier got 13 points from DeJa Ross in the loss.

The Bluejays are back in action on Saturday at Providence at 3:00 pm, in Creighton’s lone game of the week.
