Creighton Women fall to Providence

Omaha, Neb. — The Creighton women’s basketball team suffered a 77-63 loss to Providence on Saturday, Jan. 26. The loss moved the Bluejays to 10-10 on the season and 4-5 in BIG EAST play, while Providence closed the contest 13-8 overall and 5-4 in conference action.

The Bluejays came out fast hitting five three-pointers in t he opening quarter, but were unable to shake free of the Friars. Creighton’s largest lead of the period was seven at 12-5, 14-7 and 19-12, but each time the Friars answered. Despite shooting 53% from the field in the frame (8-of-15), the Bluejays led just 22-17 after one.

Providence senior Jovana Nogic began to heat up in the second, hitting four of five shots to pace the Friars. The result was Providence catching the Bluejays at 30-30, then taking its first lead of the game at 32-30 with 3:12 left before the half. Creighton recaptured the advantage at 37-36 in the closing moments of the half on a three-pointer from senior Brooke Kissinger, but Nogic connected for two in the final second to give Providence a 38-37 lead at the break.

Creighton found themselves on the wrong side of 12-3 run to open the second half, trailing 53-40 with 4:07 left in the third, and never recovered. A seven-point surge encompassing the final five points of the third and a bucket to open the fourth brought the Bluejays within five at 55-50, but Providence responded with five straight to push the deficit back to double-digits. Down the stretch the Friars held Creighton at bay to claim the win.

Senior Audrey Faber led Creighton with 16 points, while sophomore Temi Carda closed with 15 points. Nogic led all scorers with 18 points, while Maddie Jolin and Earlette Scott each finished with 12 points.

Creighton returns to the court on Friday, Feb. 1 as the Bluejays face Georgetown at 6:00 pm.
