INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Creighton women’s basketball team suffered a 63-58 loss at Butler on Sunday, Jan. 4.

The loss dropped the Bluejays to 8-7 on the season and 1-3 in BIG EAST Conference play, while Butler moved to 6-9 overall and 2-2 in BIG EAST action.

The Bluejays bounced out to an early 12-4 lead as four of Creighton’s got involved.  Sophomore MC McGrory led the way with four of her 17 points in the first two minutes.  Creighton maintained that separation into the middle of the frame, holding a 17-10 lead with 11:52 remaining.

Butler seized the momentum with a 13-5 run over the next ten minutes to claim a 23-22 lead.  Freshman Jade Owens dropped in a running jumper with 2:20 remaining to break a four-minute scoreless streak to give Creighton the lead back at 24-23, but Butler outscored the Bluejays 8-2 down the stretch to take a 31-26 lead into halftime.

Creighton’s shooting struggles continued through the onset of the second half as the Bluejays hit just one of its first eight shots, falling behind 41-34 with 12:56 remaining.

The Bluejays used a five-point burst on a three-ball from junior Marissa Janning and a jumper by Owens to make it a one possession game at 41-39.  Creighton, however, were unable to break through to reclaim the lead.  The Bluejays got within a bucket on two more occasions, 51-49 (5:19) & 56-54 (2:11), but Butler proved equal to each test.

McGrory’s 17 points led Creighton, while Janning finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds for her second career double-double.

Butler got a game-high 26 points from Loryn Goodwin and 23 from Ijeoma Uchendu.

The Bluejays return to action on Friday Jan. 9 as Creighton hosts Villanova at 7:00 p.m.
