MILWAUKEE, Wis. — The No. 22 Creighton Volleyball team won its seventh BIG EAST Tournament in the last eight years with a 3-0 win at Marquette on Saturday, Nov. 27. Creighton’s 13th straight win and school-record 30th of the season also clinches the program’s 11th all-time NCAA Tournament bid.

Scores of the match were 25-20, 25-22, 25-20.

Creighton’s (30-3) defense set the tone early in the first set, combining for five blocks and 19 digs to limit Marquette to .061 hitting in a 25-20 victory. Annika Welty had four blocks and Kendra Wait three rejections while Norah Sis had four kills to pace the Bluejay offense.

Creighton rallied from a seven point deficit in the second set to take a 2-0 lead in the match. The Bluejays trailed by as much as 16-9 and were still down 18-12 until Kendra Wait unleashed a 9-0 serving run that moved CU in front, 21-18. Marquette got within one at 23-22 before a kill from Jaela Zimmerman and an ace by Abby Bottomley closed out the game.

Creighton fell behind 7-3 early in the third set before another rally. Ally Van Eekeren served a 3-0 run to put the Bluejays in front for good at 18-17 on a kill from Wait. After the teams traded sideouts, Wait started a 3-0 run of her own with an ace. The Jays would win the final four points of the match, earning the title on back-to-back-to-back kills by Zimmerman, Davis and Sis. That trio was responsible for 10 of CU’s 12 kills in the final set and Welty had a hand in four of CU’s six stuffs.

The BIG EAST Freshman of the Year, Sis led all players with 13 kills and added 11 digs for the double-double to also bring home Most Outstanding Player recognition. Also finishing with a double-double were All-BIG EAST choices Wait (24 assists, 12 digs) and Zimmerman (11 kills, 12 digs), with Sis, Wait and Zimmerman also earning spots on the All-Tournament Team. Welty had a career-high 10 blocks in the victory, as well. Creighton had 36 kills, five aces, 51 digs and 14 blocks on .147 hitting.

Marquette (26-5) was led by 12 kills from Savannah Rennie, and BIG EAST Co-Player of the Year Taylor Wolf added 18 assists, 14 digs and seven kills. The Golden Eagles hit .083 in the contest against CU’s top-ranked defense and had 34 kills, four aces and eight rejections.
