Creighton Volleyball sweeps Georgetown

OMAHA, Neb. — No. 23 Creighton became the nation’s first volleyball team to 25 victories with a convincing 3-0 sweep at Georgetown on Friday, Nov. 12.

Scores of CU’s 19th sweep of the season were 25-13, 25-15, 25-14.

“Bruce Rasmussen texted me after the match to never take a road win for granted and that’s what I feel,” said Creighton head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth. “We know Georgetown isn’t at the top of the league but we also know they’ve notched some upsets at home and have some good pieces when they come together, so I was pleased to come out with the sweep.”

Abby Bottomley led Creighton (25-3, 13-2 BIG EAST) with 19 digs and served up two of the Bluejays’ nine aces while helping to hold the Hoyas to .017 hitting in 116 swings. Creighton finished with 31 kills, nine aces, 58 digs and nine blocks on .218 hitting.

Georgetown (6-20, 2-13 BIG EAST) got seven kills from Mary Grace Goyena and Giselle Williams, in addition to 16 digs by libero Jessica Cusi. The Hoyas had 24 kills as well as 22 attack errors and aded one ace, 58 digs and a pair of blocks.

Creighton never trailed in the opening set, racing to a 12-5 lead early after back-to-back aces by Norah Sis.  CU had 23 digs in the opener, including seven from Sis, who also added three kills.

Creighton took the lead for good after Bottomley’s 6-0 serving run after surrendering the first three points of the second set. Keeley Davis had a kill to put Creighton ahead 21-15 late before the junior served out the rest of the set.

The Jays closed out the match with a 25-14 win in which it hit .241, with four kills and two blocks by Sis leading the way.

Creighton returns to the floor on Saturday at 6 pm for a match at Villanova.
