VILLANOVA, Pa — The Creighton softball team used an eight-run seventh inning to take the final game of a BIG EAST series at Villanova, 12-3 on Sunday afternoon.
The Bluejays improved to 12-22 overall and 3-6 in conference action, while the Wildcats dropped to 19-13 overall and 4-5 in BIG EAST play.
The Jays’ victory marked their first win in six tries at the Villanova Softball Complex. Creighton also snapped a five-game losing streak during the 2017 season.
Six different Bluejays recorded two hits to lead the offensive attack on Sunday, as Creighton tied season-highs in runs (12) and hits (14).
Creighton scored all eight of its seventh-inning runs before recording an out.
Jessica Lewis opened the inning with a bunt-single down the third-base line. Jen Daro followed with a bunt of her own that resulted in an error, allowing Daro to reach safely and advance Lewis to second base.
Coffiel drove in the second run of the inning with another ball that did not leave the infield. Coffiel sent a ball to third base that was mishandled by the Villanova fielder, resulting in Creighton’s sixth run of the game.
Sam Dellinger doubled over the right-fielder’s head to drive in two more, and O’Gorman dropped a single in front of the right fielder that allowed another Bluejay to cross home plate.
Reinhart capped the eight-run inning with a three-run home run to center field, her second of the season, making it 12-2 in favor of Creighton.
Daro opened Sunday’s scoring with a solo home run over the left-field wall during the third.
The senior infielder finished the day 2-for-2 with three runs scored. Daro did not record a hit during her first 13 at-bats (eight games) of BIG EAST Conference play.
Dellinger tallied her first of three RBIs on Sunday with a safety squeeze bunt. The freshman dropped the ball down the first-base line, allowing McCoy to sprint home from third and make it 3-0 in the third.
Dellinger leads the Bluejays with 24 RBIs, including 14 during BIG EAST action.
Creighton added its fourth run during the fifth with a bunt-single by Coffiel to drive in Daro.
Villanova trimmed the Bluejays lead to two runs, 4-2, with a two-run home run during the bottom of the sixth before Creighton’s big seventh inning.
The Wildcats scored the final run of the game with a solo home run during the bottom of the seventh.
Creighton’s Bryana Clark tallied her sixth complete game while allowing eight hits and three earned runs, walking six and striking out three.
The Bluejays are back in action on Friday, April 14 against Seton Hall. Creighton welcomes the Pirates to Omaha for a doubleheader on Friday beginning at noon, before a single game on Saturday (April 15) at 11 a.m.
