EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Creighton softball team fell to Evansville, 2-0, in the finale of the Evansville Softball Invitational at Cooper Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The loss drops the Bluejays to 10-7 on the season, while Evansville improves to 13-5 overall.

Creighton and Evansville battled in a pitcher’s duel as the neither team was able to push a run across until the fourth inning.

The Bluejays threatened to put a dent on the score board in the second as junior Kailey Wilson worked a lead-off walk. Sam Alm then reached on an error by the Purple Aces second baseman, which allowed Josey Marquette to advance to third. Alm stole second to put runners on second and third with one out, but Evansville’s Izzy Vetter struck out the next two batters to keep the Bluejays off the board.

Creighton threatened to score again the top of the fourth as junior Kiara Mills was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Following a pair of flyouts that moved Mills over the third, Emma Rosonke drew a four-pitch walk and stole second to put runners on second and third once again with two outs. Vetter ended the inning with her eight strikeouts of the game to keep the score locked at 0-0.

Evansville scored the first run of the game in the bottom half of the fourth after Jenna Nink led-off the inning by reaching on an infield single. A pair of groundouts moved Nink over to third, where she would steal home to give the Purple Aces a 1-0 lead.

Both teams went down in order in the fifth, while the Bluejays left a runner stranded in the top half of the sixth as Evansville held a 1-0 lead.

The Purple Aces tacked on an additional run in the bottom of the sixth when Marah Wood hit a home run over the right centerfield wall to extend their lead out to 2-0.

Trailing 2-0 in the top of the seventh, Rosonke worked a six-pitch walk to lead off the inning but was left stranded as Vetter completed her second consecutive no-hitter.

Junior Mikayla Santa Cruz was tagged with the loss, while striking out seven and allowing just three hits in six innings of work.

Evansville’s Vetter tossed the complete-game no-hitter, striking out 13 batters while allowing four walks. It was Vetter’s second consecutive no-hitter, as she threw one yesterday against Morehead State.

The Bluejays return to action on Friday, March 11 at 3 p.m. when they host Georgetown in the BIG EAST opener at the CU Sports Complex.
