Creighton Baseball swept by St. John’s

Queens, N.Y. — After dropping the first game of a Saturday twin bill 5-1, the Creighton Baseball team watched St. John’s score four runs in the ninth to complete a series sweep with a 4-3 final in the second game.

Following Saturday’s action Creighton is 20-10 on the season and 1-4 in BIG EAST play, while St. John’s is 22-10 overall and 6-0 in conference action.

Game 1: St. John’s 5, Creighton 1
The Red Storm jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with an RBI single from Robert Boselli III, the third single of the opening frame.

Creighton answered in the third as junior Michael Emodi laced an RBI single through the right side to plate junior Clark Brikman.

St. John’s, however, plated four runs on five hits in the fourth inning. Ryan Hogan and Josh Shaw each delivered two-run singles in the inning to push the Red Storm edge to 5-1.

Bluejays starter Mitch Ragan took the loss (3-2), allowing five runs on nine hits and one walk in six innings of work. St. John’s starter Kevin Magee earned the win (4-3), limiting Creighton to one run on six hits in seven innings.
Game 2: St. John’s 4, Creighton 3
The second game of the day was a pitcher’s duel between Creighton senior Preston Church and St. John’s Michael LoPresti.

The two hurlers put up zeros through the first seven innings, but the Bluejays pushed ahead with a run in the eighth. Sophomore Parker Upton opened the inning with a single through the left side, moved to second on a sac bunt from Jordan Hovey, and scored on a two-out RBI single by sophomore Isaac Collins.

The Bluejays added two insurance runs in the ninth. Sophomore Will Robertson led off the ninth with a single to right. A sacrifice and an error gave Creighton runners at the corners with one down. Sophomore Jason Allbery put two men in scoring position with a steal of second, then Upton laced a two-run single through the left side to push Creighton’s lead to 3-0.

Unfortunately the Red Storm had one more trip to the plate in the bottom of the ninth. The Red Storm got a leadoff single from Mike Anitco, followed by a double from Luke Stampfl. A key in the inning came from the umpire as catcher’s interference was called on Michael Emodi on a ball lined back to Creighton pitcher Jonah Smith. Instead of getting the first out of the inning, St. John’s had the bases loaded without an out.

A two-run single from Brandon Miller made it 3-2, following a sac bunt St. John’s Josh Shaw laced a walk-off two run single to left.

Smith took the loss (2-1) for Creighton, allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits. St. John’s Joe LaSorsa snaked a win (2-0) by getting the final out of the ninth.

Creighton returns to the diamond on Tuesday, April 17 as the Bluejays host Nebraska-Omaha at 6:30 pm in TD Ameritrade Park Omaha.
