Creighton Baseball loses to Wichita State

Omaha, Neb. — Leading 3-1 after three inning, the Creighton Baseball squad settled for a series split with Wichita State as the Bluejays fell 7-4 on Sunday, March 18.

The loss moved Creighton to 10-6 on the season, while Wichita State moved to 13-4.

The Shockers jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first, but Creighton rallied with three runs on two hits in the third. With one down in the frame juniors Ryan Mantle and Jordan Hoveyworked the count to earn consecutive walks. Fellow junior Clark Brinkman followed with Creighton’s first hit of the day, an RBI single to center to knot the score at 1-1. Moments later Brinkmam swiped second, but the throw from Wichita State catcher, Noah Croft, sailed into center allowing Hovey to score. One out later, junior Michael Emodi was hit by a pitch to put Bluejays at the corners, then sophomore Will Robertson capitalized with an RBI single through the right side to make it 3-1.

Wichita State answered with a game-tying two-run home run from Luke Ritter with one out in the fourth.

Neither starter lasted beyond the third as the Bluejays chased Shocker Liam Eddy with three runs in third and Bluejay starter Mitch Ragan yielded to the bullpen in the fourth.

Creighton reclaimed the lead, 4-3, in the bottom of the fourth by taking advantage of a costly Shocker error. Junior Thomas Luevano opened the frame with a walk, then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt that was thrown away. Finally Mantle lifted a sac fly to right, plating Luevano.

Wichita State’s offense, however, continued to push runs across the board with the game-tying run in the fifth, two more in the sixth and an insurance run in the seventh.

Bluejay senior Preston Church took the loss (1-2), allowing one run on one hit in two-thirds of an inning. Wichita State’s Cody Tyler collected the win (2-0) with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, while Tommy Barnhouse collected his third save of the season with a scoreless ninth.

Creighton returns to the diamond on Tuesday, March 20 as the Bluejays host South Dakota State at 6:30 pm.
