Cincinnati, Ohio — Powered by eight home runs, the Creighton Baseball team defeated Xavier 24-8 on Friday, April 20. Juniors Jack Strunc and Thomas Luevano each smashed two round-trippers in the win, while sophomore Isaac Collins finished with eight RBI to lead the way.
The victory pushed Creighton to 22-10 on the season and 2-4 in BIG EAST play, while Xavier fell to 12-25 overall and 2-5 in conference action.
Creighton’s offense was almost unstoppable, scoring in every inning except the seventh.
The Bluejays jumped ahead with the first batter of the game as junior Clark Brinkman blasted a leadoff home run. One out later junior Michael Emodi drew a walk, then sophomore Will Robertson drove his eighth home run over the wall in right-center to give Creighton a 3-0 edge.
The Bluejay bats went back to work in the second as three straight walks loaded the bags for Robertson. The outfielder bounced into an RBI fielder’s choice. Strunc followed with his first home run of the game, a three-run shot to left to make it 7-0.
After the two teams traded two run frames in the third, Collins pushed Creighton out to a 13-3 edge with a grand slam to left in the fourth.
The fifth frame saw Strunc launch his second home run, then junior Ryan Mantle blasted a two run shot.
Luevano’s two home runs came in the sixth and the ninth, a solo blast in the sixth and a three-run round tripper in the ninth.
Creighton starters Ryan Tapani picked up the win, allowing six runs on nine hits in seven innings to move to 6-1 on the season.
Xavier starter Matt Kent took the loss (3-1), allowing three runs on three hits and two walks in one inning.
Collin’s finished with five hits (5-of-7) with eight RBI, while Strunc was 5-of-7 with four RBI and three runs scored and Luevano finished 4-of-6 with four RBI and four runs scored.
The two squads continue the three-game series on Saturday, April 21 at 12:00 pm (CT).
