The Briar Cliff women’s volleyball team, receiving votes in this week’s top 25, hosted Mount Marty in its home opener as well as conference opener, sweeping the Lancers 3-0. The Cliff is now 6-3 on the season and 1-0 in the GPAC, while Mount Marty drops to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in league play.
The Chargers defeated the Lancers in straight sets 3-0 by scores of 25-9, 25-15 and 25-15. Briar Cliff’s offense hit a highly efficient .400 with 36 kills and only eight errors on 70 attacks, while the Charger defense held the Lancers to -.012 hitting with 18 kills and 19 errors on 83 attacks. BCU also had advantages in assists (34-15), service aces (6-2), digs (36-23) and blocks (9-4).
Katelin Langel and Courtney Schafer both piled up eight kills to lead the Charger offense, followed by Emily Sanburg with six, Nicolette Lavulo with five and Teerstyn Johnson with four K’s. Delaney Meyer dished out 15 assists and Laura Barry added 13 helpers. Katie Berg notched a team-high five service aces to go with two digs and Breanne Hankins led the Cliff with 11 digs, trailed by Barry and Megan Lee with six each. Mount Marty was led in kills by Rachel Reiff and Brooke Bennett with five kills and Amber Dysthe had six assists.
Briar Cliff will be at home again on Tuesday, hosting crosstown rival Morningside. A JV match will kick things off at 6 p.m. and the varsity showcase will be at 7:30 p.m.
