Charger baseball splits on day two of opening weekend

Briar Cliff baseball wrapped up its weekend trip to Texas with a split Sunday, first falling to Jarvis Christian 8-7 and then beating Baker 6-5. The team moves to 2-2 on the season after opening weekend. In game two, Arnulfo Gutierrez hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Chargers the win.

Both teams had hot bats to start game one, with the Cliff leading 5-4 after the first inning and 6-4 after the second. Both teams were quiet in the following two innings but each team scored in the fifth, with one run for BC and three for Jarvis Christian to tie the game at seven all. JCC was able to tack on one more run in the sixth for the win.

Jake Hubbard pitched the majority of the first game, seeing 12 batters in four innings. Tyler Williams allowed one run and is tagged with the loss.

Harrison Jestel was the most productive Charger, going 2-for-2 at the plate and scoring one run.

In game two, BC scored two runs in the first, second and sixth innings to top Baker. Connor Christiansen earned his first win of the season on the mound and Ben Pigg led the team offensively with two runs in three at bats. Kaiona Navas struck out two batters in the final inning of the day to ensure the victory.

The Blue and Gold will return to the diamond February 23 in Fayette, Mo., taking on Bellevue in a doubleheader.
