ARLINGTON – The high school basketball season began on Thursday, November 29 when West Point-Beemer traveled to Arlington for a girls and boys varsity doubleheader, broadcast on 107.9 The Bull.
The Cadet girls shot 13-18 from three point range on their way to a 76-37 thrashing of the Eagles. Sierra Kile led WPB with 24 points, going along with 22 from Sidney Swanson.
The season opening win was also the first win for new head coach Taylor Shepard.
The West Point-Beemer boys survived double overtime and held on to beat Arlington 61-56.
The Eagles scored with less than 20 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 48-48, sending it into overtime. Both teams then scored six points in the first OT period, leaving it tied at 54-54. The Cadets outscored the Eagles 7-2 in the second OT to get to the win.
Ben Vander Griend led three Cadets in double figures with 24 points. Blake Anderson had 21 points and Zach Vander Griend had 10.
Both West Point-Beemer teams host Omaha Roncalli Catholic on Saturday.
