Briar Cliff women end skid with win over College of Saint Mary

The Briar Cliff women’s basketball team ended a four-game losing streak with a 74-60 victory over College of Saint Mary at the Newman Flanagan Center. The Chargers improved to 7-11 overall and 4-4 in the GPAC with the win, while the Flames dropped to 2-14 overall and 1-7 in league play.

Briar Cliff used a balanced offense that saw 10 Chargers score in the game, with three making their way into double figures. The Cliff led for the majority of the game as CSM had its largest lead of two points just two minutes into the contest, while BC led by as many as 24 points throughout the game. Despite the Chargers losing the turnover battle 25-23, it was Briar Cliff who was able to capitalize on the miscues with a 26-19 edge in points off turnovers. The Chargers did have a 39-37 advantage in rebounding and the 3-point shot also favor BC with the Cliff having 12 longballs, compared to five by Saint Mary.

The Chargers shot 38.7 percent from the field, 44.4 percent from long range and 73.7 percent from the free throw line. Three Chargers scored in double-digits in the game with Faith Troshynski leading the team with 12 points and Alyssa Carley and Logan Ehlers both had 11 points. Johanna VaskeJulie Targy and Annie Dewberry all poured in eight points and Taylor Vasa added seven points. Dewberry nearly had a double-double with a team-high 12 rebounds and Vasa was next with seven boards. Targy was the team leader in both assists (7) and steals (4). Dewberry had four helpers and Vaske handed out three assists as well.

College of Saint Mary shot 30.3 percent from the field, 31.3 percent from beyond the arc and 75.0 percent from the stripe. Miranda Acuna led the Flames in scoring with 19 points and Amy Talavou added 13 points. Trista Merrival had a team-high eight rebounds.

Briar Cliff will be in action again on Saturday, facing Mount Marty in the CNOS Classic at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City. Tipoff between the Chargers and Lancers is set for 2 p.m.
