Briar Cliff Volleyball remains undefeated

The Briar Cliff women’s volleyball team improved to a perfect 7-0 this season with two wins at day one of the CSM Flames Invite at Grace University in Omaha. BC opened the day with a 3-0 sweep of Grace and followed that with a 3-1 victory over Dakota State. Five of the Chargers victories this season have been 3-0 sweeps.

The Chargers dominated the Royals in the sweep by set scores of 25-11, 26-24 and 25-16. Briar Cliff held Grace to a hitting percentage of .140 with 25 kills and 12 errors on 93 attacks, compared to the Cliff hitting .262 with 46 kills and only 18 errors on 107 attacks. The Chargers also had advantages in assists (44-21), service aces (10-1) and digs (50-36).

Courtney Schafer racked up 15 kills on 27 attacks to go with only four errors for a hitting percentage of .407. Toni Beck had the highest hitting percentage on the team at .450 with nine kills and no errors on 20 attacks. Emily Sanburg also made her way into double-digit K’s with 12. Delaney Meyer dished out 24 assists and Laura Barry added 13 helpers. Meyer and Brooklyn Tolliver shared the team lead in service aces with three apiece and Breanne Hankinsaccumulated a team leading 18 digs.

In game two, Briar Cliff took the first two sets from Dakota State by scores of 25-18 and 25-13 before DSU bounced back with a 27-25 win in set three. The Chargers then closed out the Trojans in the fourth set 25-19 for the 3-1 victory. Briar Cliff’s defense came up huge in the match, notching 13.5 blocks and holding Dakota State to a hitting percentage of .029 with 33 kills and 29 errors on 138 attacks. The Chargers offense hit .167 in the contest with 51 kills and 27 errors on 144 attacks. BC again had advantages in assists (47-30), digs (61-54) and blocks (13.5-9.0).

Schafer again paced the offensive attack, this time piling up 18 K’s and Sanburg was also again in double figures with 10 kills. Melissa Ditter notched nine kills and Beck added seven. Meyer orchestrated the offense to 28 more assists and Barry distributed 16 more helpers. The Charger serving was on fire with 10 more aces, led by Olivia Tomlin and Katie Berg with three each. Hankins recorded another team-high 21 digs and Tolliver added 11 digs. Kiaya Alderson and Sanburg both had six blocks in the match.

Briar Cliff will be in action Saturday on day two of the CSM Invite, facing Waldorf at 10 a.m. and McPherson at 4 p.m.
