The Briar Cliff softball team hosted Mount Marty on Tuesday at Bishop Mueller Field in a conference doubleheader with Mount Marty winning game one 6-3 and BC took game two by a score of 3-0. The Chargers are now 5-22 overall and 2-8 in the GPAC, while the Lancers moved to 10-16 overall and 6-6 in league play.
The Cliff jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in game one with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Nicole Romero belted a two-run double to deep right field, scoring Nicole Wiles and Summer Williams. Mount Marty responded with five runs over the next three innings to lead 5-2 heading into the bottom of the fourth until Wiles pulled the Chargers within two runs at 5-3 with a single up the middle to score Rachele Heaton. BC’s bats went quiet after that however and Mount Marty tacked on an insurance run in the seventh for the 6-3 win. The Chargers outhit the Lancers 11-10 in the game and both teams had one error.
Romero was perfect at the plate for the Blue & Gold in the contest, going 4-4 and also having a team-high two RBI. Game two was a pitching gem by Williams as she shutdown the Lancers offense, allowing no runs and only one hit. The Charger offense also gave Williams early offense to work with, scoring once in the first inning and twice in the second inning. Brenna Oliver belted a triple to right-center field as the second batter of the game and Romero then laid down a squeeze bunt to score Oliver and reach base safely. Wiles then laid down a squeeze of her own in the second to score Codie Fineran and Lanae Shiley scored the third run of the game on a stolen base to put BC up 3-0 after two innings of play. Neither offense was able to score the rest of the way as Williams tossed the complete-game shutout in the 3-0 win.
Briar Cliff outhit Mount Marty 7-1 in the contest and forced the Lancers into stranding 11 runners on base. Fineran and Wiles shared the team lead with two hits apiece, while Oliver, Romero and Shiley all had one hit. Wiles and Romero both had an RBI and Oliver, Fineran and Shiley all scored once. Williams notched three strikeouts in the victory.
