Briar Cliff men picked 1st in GPAC; women 4th

The Briar Cliff men’s basketball was dubbed the favorite to win the conference in the upcoming season with the release of the 2016-17 GPAC Men’s Basketball Preseason Coaches’ Poll earlier today. The Chargers won both the regular season and conference tournament titles a season ago after going 32-4 overall and 18-2 in the GPAC and advanced to the Elite Eight of the NAIA national tournament.

Briar Cliff garnered nine first place votes, as coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team, and received 81 points to lead the poll. Midland received 72 points and one first place vote to come in second in the poll, followed by Dakota Wesleyan with 57 points, Dordt with 53 points and Morningside completed the top five with 48 points.
The Chargers kickoff the 2016-17 campaign on November 1 with a road game at Mount Mercy at 7 p.m.


The Briar Cliff women’s basketball team was picked to finish fourth in the 2016-17 GPAC Women’s Basketball Preseason Coaches’ Poll after the Chargers went 23-10 overall last season and were 14-8 in the GPAC.

Briar Cliff received 72 points in the poll to land at fourth, four points behind Concordia and its 76 points. Dakota Wesleyan and Morningside both secured 95 points in the poll to tie for first with the Tigers receiving six first place votes, compared to the Mustangs’ five first place votes. Northwestern rounded out the top five with 67 points.

Briar Cliff opens the regular season on October 29th in Mayville, North Dakota with a neutral court contest against Jamestown at 8 p.m.
