The Briar Cliff women’s volleyball team swept Mayville State 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-18) this evening in the Newman Flanagan Center. The Chargers improved to 5-0 on the season with the victory, while the Comets fell to 1-9.
Briar Cliff hit a .295 on the night with 51 kills and 15 errors on 122 attempts, while Mayville State earned a .107 at the clip with 27 K’s and 16 errors on 103 attacks. The Chargers claimed the advantage in kills (51-27) and assists (49-25). Briar Cliff also held the edge in digs (56-50) and service aces (6-1). BCU rejected seven attacks, compared to MSU with three blocks.
Three Chargers notched double-digit kills with Courtney Schafer pacing the team with 16 kills, followed by Melissa Ditter with 12 K’s and Emily Sanburg with 11. Laura Barry and Delaney Meyer shared the setting duties for the Cliff, notching 22 assists and 21 helpers, respectively. Breanne Hankins paced the defense with 17 digs, trailed by Delaney Meyer with nine digs. Olivia Tomlin led the team in blocks with five (one solo, four assisted). Tomlin and Katie Berg each created two service aces.
Hannah Bliss and Cassidy Miller each accounted for eight kills to lead the Comets. Jana Mehus dished out 21 assists offensively, while Jayden Warner and TaLise Hansen were the best defenders for MSU with 13 digs apiece. Janey Ross was the only player for Mayville State to notch a service ace.
The Chargers will now turn their attention to the CSM Flames Invite Frioay and Saturday. Briar Cliff will battle Grace and Dakota State on Friday and Waldorf and McPherson on Saturday. The first match involving the Blue and Gold will be at 2 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday.
