This coming February, Briar Cliff University will induct three Charger legends into its athletic Hall of Fame with Sam Acheampong, Jarrod Makovicka and Dan McDermott all being inducted. The trio will go into the Hall of Fame during a ceremony on February 3 at halftime of the men’s basketball game between Briar Cliff and Dakota Wesleyan. Tip-off for that game is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Acheampong, a 2012 graduate, was a five-time NAIA All-American in track and field. He qualified for the NAIA National Track and Field Championships on eight occasions and was named All-GPAC 12 times. Acheampong still holds three school record at Briar Cliff with times of 6.31 (55 meter dash), 6.77 (60 meter dash) and 10.44 (100 meter dash). His best finish at the national meet was third in the 60 meter dash in 2011 and he had six top-eight finishes in a three year span. At the time of graduation, Acheampong also held the school record in the indoor 200 (22.34) and outdoor 200 (21.74).

Makovicka, a 2009 graduate, was a four-time All-GPAC selection, including first team his senior year. He not only owns the record for most tackles in a career at BCU with 426 but he also still holds the GPAC record for most tackles in a career as well. Makovicka notched a career-high 18 tackles in two separate games with 18 against Morningside in 2009 and 18 vs. Northwestern in 2008. He still holds the record for most fumbles recovered in a season with four and is tied for seventh in career interceptions with five in his four seasons. Makovicka has two of the top-three spots in the BC record book for most tackles in a season with 126 in 2009 (2nd) and 125 in 2008 (3rd).

McDermott coached the Charger baseball team from 1988-97, producing a career record of 345-181 during that time for a winning percentage of .656. In his nine seasons, Briar Cliff won four district championships. His 1992-97 teams were consistently ranked in the NAIA Baseball Top 20 rankings and eight of his nine teams posted winning seasons with at least 30 victories. McDermott was named district Coach of the Year five times and Regional Coach of the Year three times. He coached three first-team All-Americans, three Midwest Region Players of the Year, seven Academic All-Americans and two GTE Academic All-Americans during his tenure. He also coached numerous of All-District and All-Region selections.
