BATTLE CREEK – The Shelby-Osceola-Stromsburg junior legion baseball team is two wins away from getting to their second state championship game. SOS dismantled Battle Creek Sunday night, 16-2 in five innings in the second round of the Class C junior state tournament.

It was a well balanced attack by SOS as eight of the nine hitters drove in at least one run.

Host Battle Creek took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after SOS walked in a run with the bases loaded. It would be Battle Creek’s only run until the fifth inning.

SOS quickly responded in the bottom of the frame as Austin Coffin hit an RBI double. Coffin later stole home in the inning. SOS led 2-1 after one inning.

An error in the second inning allowed SOS to bring across another run, making it 3-1 heading to the third.

For the third straight inning, SOS would score, yet again taking advantage of an error. Pierce Branting did get credit for an RBI after hit a deep ball to right-center. SOS extended their lead 5-1 after four.

SOS opened the game up in the fifth inning when 11 runs came across to score. SOS batted around nearly twice in the frame and everybody scored at least one run and all but one batter had an RBI in the inning.

Battle Creek would score again in the fifth inning after an errant throw from the SOS catcher down to third on a stolen base runner got away into the outfield, allowing the runner to score.

SOS was led by Coffin’s 3-3 evening, including a triple, double and single as he also drove in three runs and scored three times. Bailey Belt, Mickey Hoatson, Max Hoatson and Branting all had two RBI’s. Keaton Vanhousen picked up the win on the mound.

Payton Frederick was the losing pitcher for Battle Creek.
