Big smiles, big futures ahead for Kenzey Kanno and Keyana Wilfred.

It’s been a busy week for athletes signing across the region and that includes over at Mitchell High School where a pair of young ladies have decided on their respective futures.

On Wednesday afternoon it was Kenzey Kanno putting pen to paper as she’ll continue her education while playing golf at Chadron State College.

Kanno is coming off a shared state title in golf this fall season. It was a rain shortened championships with Kanno finishing in a tie with Ogallala’s Harley Hiltibrand at 12 over par. Weather washed out round two.

Kanno is also an outstanding basketball player and with the season just getting underway with practice this week, she added they have major goals in mind (more on that shortly).

There has been so much talent coming out of Mitchell these last few years, and topping the list as far as talent, upside, or ceiling would be basketball player Keyana Wilfred.

On Thursday it was Wilfred’s turn to sign with the University of Nevada-Las Vegas (UNLV). There’s a couple of different angles that led to this decision, one being family.

With the family factor having her in Vegas every summer the logical step was to hit the summer circuit on the game floor.

High expectations for the girls basketball team again this season.

Now that Kanno and Wilfred have these college decisions out of the way, they’ll be buckling down on the practice floor prepping for another season of high school basketball.

This senior class has been front and center in helping lead Mitchell to three straight state tournaments and a fourth place finish in Class C-1 last season.

The duo says expectations remain high heading into their senior season.

Kanno…

Wilfred…

Mitchell will have their third different head coach in the last three seasons as they’ve gone from Brock Ehler to Tory Schwartz to current head coach, Shawn Harvey.

Mitchell opens their season in the Western Conference Tournament against Sterling, CO a week after Thanksgiving.
