YORK – Youth, inexperience and early deficits haunted the York volleyball team all night long. Visiting Columbus swept the Dukes: 25-16, 25-15, 25-16, Thursday night.
After falling behind 10-1 in the first set, York was never able to regroup. The Dukes are comprised of a lot of inexperience and youth this season with only three players from last year’s squad that saw any significant playing time.
York actually never grabbed the lead until early in the third set as they led Columbus, 5-1. But as they had done all night, the Discoverers regrouped and rallied for the victory.
New faces in the Duke uniform shined in night one. Aurora transfer, Masa Schierman finished with seven kills, two blocks and seven digs. Maddie Portwine, a transfer from Cross County contributed with three kills and two digs. Alexis Velde also finished with six kills.
Columbus had a balanced attack. Jaidyn Garrett and Jaleigh Adams-Tuls led the Discoverers each with eight kills. Kylie Wisehart had six aces. Columbus as a team finished with 11 ace serves.
York’s next contest is Aug. 30 when they host Aurora. Columbus will participate in the Norfolk Tournament this weekend.
