LINCOLN – Three pointers early and free throws late, played a big part in sending the Centennial Broncos boys basketball team into Friday’s state tournament semifinal round, as they defeated Wakefield 56-48.

A first half barrage of 3 point baskets staked Centennial to a 30-17 halftime lead over the Trojans in first round state tourney action Thursday night at Lincoln Northeast High School. The Broncos blistered the nets with 9 treys in the first half, including 3 each from Jackson Hirschfeld and Cooper Gierhan. In fact, Centennial only had one 2-point field goal in the first two periods.
But the Wakefield defense toughened up after intermission, allowing only 7 field goals – just one of which was from three point range, while their offense tried to chip away at the Bronco lead. A fourteen point Bronco advantage was trimmed to 6 at one point, but 10 of 14 free-throw shooting in the 4th quarter cemented the victory for Head Coach Cameron Scholl’s squad.
Senior Jackson Hirschfeld led the way for Centennial scoring 20 points, while sophomore Cooper Gierhan was in double-figures with 17, and junior Caleb Horne added 11. Sophomore Justin Erb led Wakefield with 12 points.
Centennial, now 24-2, advances to the semifinals against BRLD Friday at 3:45 pm at the Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln.
