VA makes preferred Hot Springs hospital change in final EIS

The Veterans Affairs Black Hills Health Care System has altered its recommendations on the future of its Hot Springs Veterans Hospital, indicating that instead of closing it and placing a community based outpatient clinic in the community the clinic will be located on the Hot Springs hospital campus.

The change was made in the Final Environmental impact Statement on reconfiguration of the South Dakota Health Care System after a lengthy comment period on the Draft EIS. Sandra Horsman, Black Hills Health Care System Director, says what type of services will be provided are unknown until the VA director makes a final decision.

Third District Congressman Adrian Smith says while the VA’s amended proposal is a step in the right direction, he still has serious concerns the proposed changes will create new access-to-care challenges for veterans in western Nebraska.

Horsman says they are hoping a final decision by the VA Director is expected before the end of the year.
