Western and northern Nebraska are seeing their first snows Thursday.

The National Weather Service says snow is falling Thursday afternoon from Alliance to Valentine, with up to two inches expected before tapering off in the late afternoon. 33 miles south of Merriman in rural Cherry county, there was a report of five inches of snow.

High temperatures aren’t expected to climb past the upper 30s with
overnight lows in the 20s, resulting in the first widespread regional freeze  that should mark the end of the growing season, and may cause damage to crops and gardens .

Highs are expected to rebound into the 50s Friday,  in the 70s over the weekend and close to 80 by Monday.
