A storm Sunday evening derailed 7 train cars north of Lake McConaughy. Reports also say some tents were destroyed, including a tent full of people that was leveled by a tree branch. Those injured were taken to a hospital with what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries. The Keith County Sheriff’s Office in Ogallala reports it did not dispatch deputies to either location.
A Keith County Sheriff’s Office Communications specialist says Union Pacific Railroad handled the derailment and the Sheriff’s Office was not made aware of the incident involving the tree branch falling on a tent or tents.
