Torrington’s Chief of Police has been suspended without pay following his alleged involvement in a hit-and-run accident last week.
Mayor Mike Varney confirmed the suspension of Chief Eric Sharp on Monday, and says the Torrington City Council will discuss how to proceed during Tuesday night’s meeting in closed session.
The Goshen County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the accident, where Sharp reportedly hit a utility pole with his pickup and left the scene without alerting authorities.
A media release from the GCSO states that they were dispatched to the scene of an accident at the corner of East A Street and East 22nd Avenue after a power pole had been hit and destroyed. A witness says around Thursday at 1:28 a.m. they observed a newer Chevy pickup leaving the area after the crash, and subsequent investigation revealed that Sharp’s pickup had damage consistent with the crash.
Sheriff Don Murphy conducted an investigation and issued Sharp two citations: one for careless driving and one for failure to report a motor vehicle crash involving property damage.
An independent prosecutor appointed by Goshen County and Prosecuting Attorney Ken Brown will review the case for other charges.
