Scottsbluff State Senator John Stinner says finding additional revenues for the state is key to providing the property tax relief rural Nebraskans seek.

During his annual legislative review at the Scottsbluff Runza, Stinner said he  hopes the legislature will discuss some of the bills that failed to get out of the Revenue Committee. But he emphasized in order to balance the three legged stool of income, sales, and property taxes to fund education, more money in state coffers is needed.

Stinner says he knows Governor Ricketts is against many of  the alternative property tax relief ideas being presented by lawmakers.

Stinner says reforming the state aid to education formula, which he says is not transparent and is difficult to understand, also needs to be done. Stinner says a change where school districts get aid for each child in school could be looked at.

Stinner also said  redistricting of the Legislature will be one of the biggest issues facing Panhandle senators over the next two years.

Stinner says there are only five or six senators representing the western half of the state. He says with the continued growth in Lincoln and Omaha and the reduced population out west, that number might be only four. Stinner says western senators will need to work hard to make sure that doesn’t happen.
