Scotts Bluff County will continue to pay ESU #13 for the services of two teachers despite the fact operations at the county’s juvenile detention facility have been closed down.
Board Chair Mark Masterton says under the contract that runs through the end of June next year, the county is obligated to pay ESU #13 $15,000 a month for the services of the two teachers under their contract.
Masterton says, “It’s gonna hurt. But it’s my opinion we need to honor the contract no matter how expensive it may be.”
Under continuing education contract law the county needed to alert the teachers by April their services were no longer needed. Since the county’s action to close the detention center took place this summer, they are required to cover the money in the contract.
The teachers are now substituting throughout the ESU #13 area, and Superintendent Jeff West’s office says any income made by the educators in that role is being reduced from the monthly billing sent to the county.
