A bunch of classes will be held at Northeast Community College in West Point and Norfolk in March. The full list of class information can be found below.

 

NORFOLK – The Allied Health Division at Northeast Community College will offer another Heart Code – BLS for Healthcare Provider Online & Skills Session course, beginning soon.

The first portion of this course (HLTH 5300/18S & CRN #70225) is web-based and is available on-line
24 hours a day. The skills session meets Saturday, March 10, from 8 a.m.-12 p.m., in the Arlo Wirth building, Room 101, on the Norfolk campus.

The Basic Life Support course is designed to provide a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking. This course is designed for the first time or renewal certification and has two parts for completion.

Part 1 provides a flexible alternative to classroom training. Part 2 is a skills session where hands on practice and competency testing are completed with a Certified AHA Instructor. When online Part 1 is completed, students will register for the Skills Sessions. Participants are to bring their online completion certificate (Part 1 completed within the last 60 days) to the Skills Session for which they have registered.

Online key codes for Part 1 are available at the Hawks Shop in the Student Center on the Norfolk campus, (402) 844-7140. NOTE: Participants need to bring their AHA Part 1 Health Care Provider Online Course Completion Certificate to be admitted to the Skills Session. No textbook is required for this class.

WEST POINT – Northeast Community College in West Point will offer an upcoming course on social media for businesses.

Social Media for Businesses (INFO 5155/18S & CRN #70156) will meet Thursday, March 15, from 6-9 p.m. in Room 212 of the West Point Extended Campus, 202 Anna Stalp Ave.

As a business professional, it is important to understand how social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn can help build relationships, increase awareness, network, turn cold leads into warm leads and improve brand recognition. Participants will learn functionality, analytics and advertising. Any business can benefit by the reach, affordability and flexibility of social media.

Participants are asked to have some familiarity with social media before enrolling in the course.

NORFOLK – The Allied Health Division at Northeast Community College will offer additional Heart Code – Heartsaver CPR/AED and First Aid On-line Skills Sessions.

Three testing sessions – Heartsaver CPR/AED/First Aid (HLTH 5130/18S & CRN #70214); Heartsaver CPR/AED – Adult, Infant and Child (HLTH 5150/18S & CRN #70219); Heartsaver First Aid (HLTH 5105/18S & CRN #70209) will be held Saturday, March 10, from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. in the Arlo Wirth building, Room 101, on the Norfolk campus.

The Heartsaver CPR/AED and First Aid course CPR/AED (testing sessions will cover any of the combinations as listed above) – teaching rescuers to recognize and treat cardiac arrest and choking for adults, children and infant victims, use an AED and First Aid – teaching management of certain environmental reactions; allergic reactions, cuts, wounds, bites, and various situations requiring treatments.

The on-line course is designed for the first time or renewal certification. This course is accessible 24 hours a day and provides a flexible alternative to classroom training for the course itself. After completing this course, students are eligible to register for the testing session. Online key codes for Part 1 (online course) are available at the Hawks Shop in the Norfolk campus Student Center, (402)-844-7140. Students will need to bring their AHA Online Course Completion Certificate (within 60 days) to be admitted to the Skills Testing Session. No textbook is required for this class.

NORFOLK – Northeast Community College in Norfolk will offer a new class on decluttering next month.

Living Life in 3-D (HOEC 5190/18S & CRN #70253) meets on Saturday, March 10, from 9-11 a.m. in the Lifelong Learning Center on the Norfolk campus.

In this class, participants will learn about the three “D”s to increased happiness: delete, downsize and delegation. Through simple tactics, they will learn to declutter their lives and decrease the risk of depression. They will learn how to organize their homes and acquire skills that can be used immediately, like folding clothes in a certain way to increase storage space.

NORFOLK – Northeast Community College in Norfolk will offer an additional non-credit class to equip 14-17-year-olds with the basic skills to operate a motor vehicle.

The Provisional Operator’s Permit (P.O.P.) Driver’s Education Course (TRAN 5110/18S & CRN # 70013/70014) will be held March 11-25. Class will be held Saturdays, 8-12 p.m., and Sundays, 1-5 p.m. The class meets in Room 116 of the Utility Line Building, east of the Norfolk campus.

The class includes 20 hours of classroom lecture. The required six hours of driving lab will be arranged between the instructor and the student.

Students are asked to bring their learner’s or school driving permit to the first class. A book will be provided. Students must sign up for both the lecture class and the driving sessions. A parents or guardian is asked to attend the first part of the first class along with the student.

NORFOLK – The Business and Technology Division at Northeast Community College has added several one-credit technology classes to its upcoming schedule.

Microsoft Excel 2016 (OFFT 1520/18S & CRN #24147) will meet Tuesdays, March 12-May 9, in Room 126 of the Maclay Building on the Norfolk campus.

In this class, students will be introduced to using a Microsoft Excel worksheet for decision making and mathematical calculations. Stacy Anderson is the instructor.

Microsoft Access 2016 – Online (OFFT 1520/18S & CRN #23517) will be held March 12-May 9, online.

In this course, students will learn to effectively operate the database portion of the Microsoft Office suite. Kris Coan is the instructor for this course.

Microsoft Powerpoint 2016 – Online (OFFT 1520/18S & CRN #20562) will be held March 12-May 9, online.

In this course, students will learn to create, edit and present a slide presentations with text, bullets, clipart, pictures and animations. Kris Coan is the instructor.

Web Page Development – Online (INFO 1710/18S & CRN #20201) will meet March 12-May 9, online.

Participants will learn the basics of Hyper-Text Markup Language (HTML) as they plan, design and create an internet web page. Kirk Christian is the instructor for the class.

NORFOLK – The Allied Health Division at Northeast Community College will offer a course that prepare Nursing Assistant State registry candidates for their written and skill competency evaluations.

Nurse Aide Refresher (NURA 5105/18S & CRN #70351) will be offered Monday, March 12, from 4-8 p.m. in Room 124 of the Arlo Wirth Building on the Northeast campus.

The course is designed to review nursing assistant concepts and explore topics in providing safe, effective and caring services to the patients, residents and clients of any health care setting.

NORFOLK – The Applied Technology Division at Northeast Community College in Norfolk will offer a hands-on course in Small Engine, Motorcycle, All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Maintenance and Repair beginning soon.

The two-credit course (DESL 1990/18S & CRN #21336) will be held Mondays, March 12-May 7, from 5:30 – 8:45 p.m., in the Diesel Technology building, Room 103.

In this course, students will learn how to save money by making their own repairs to ATVs, motorcycles, lawn mowers, chain saws, snow blowers and other small engines. They will develop the skills needed to inspect, test, repair and maintain nearly anything with a small engine. The class, which is suitable for beginning and advanced students, includes lab time to work on hands-on projects.

WEST POINT – A welcome door hanging class will be offered soon at Northeast Community College in West Point.

Welcome Door Hanging HOEC 5135/18S & CRN #70154) meets Monday, March 12, from 6:30-9 p.m. at the Northeast Community College Extended Campus, 202 Anna Stalp Avenue, Room 207.

In this class, participants will create a versatile round wooden “Hello” or “Welcome” greeting sign for their front doors that can be displayed year-round.

All supplied are included in the cost of the class, except for ribbon. Participants are asked to bring one 3-foot roll of ribbon of your choice. Ribbon with a wire edge or burlap is recommended.

WEST POINT – Two beginning computer courses will be coming to Northeast Community College in
West Point in March.

Basic Computer I (INFO 5105/18S & CRN #70155) will be held Tuesday, March 13 from
1-4 p.m. in the Northeast Community College Extended Campus, 202 Anna Stalp Avenue,
Room 212.

Instructor Diann Ballard will go over beginning computer skills for anyone who has very limited computer knowledge or none at all. Topics will include beginning computer skills, such as powering the computer on and off, using a mouse and keyboard, utilizing the desktop, and launching programs.

Basic Computer II (INFO 5305/18S & CRN #70158 will be held Thursday, March 15, from
1-4 p.m. in the same location.

In this class, Ballard will continue the journey into the world of computers. Students will expand their skills by learning to use a word processor and work with tool and task bars. Performing basic formatting functions and saving and printing documents will also be covered.

Both classes will be taught at a very relaxed pace for those persons apprehensive about operating a computer. There will be significant hands-on practice of each concept.

NORFOLK – Northeast Community College in Norfolk will offer another one credit course in electrical licensing in March.

Electrical Licensing I (ELTR 2015/18S & CRN #23474) will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, March 13-22, from 6:30-10 p.m. in the Applied Technology building, Room 115 A/B.

In this class, Instructor Dan Frohberg will cover a minimum of eight hours on code with the additional eight hours on related topics. These classes, tailored to fit needs and requirements, will also cover the changes in the National Electrical Code and Calculations. They are also used for education hours needed for licensing.

WEST POINT – Northeast Community College in West Point will offer a class on web page developing using Google Sites, beginning soon.

Web Page Development Using Google (INFO 5240/18S & CRN #70154) will meet Tuesday, March 13, from 6:30-9:30 p.m. in Room 212 of the West Point Extended Campus, 202 Anna Stalp Ave.

In this course, participants will create a webpage for their business, job or family using Google Sites. They will learn to insert images, text and links as well as how to share the site with additional editors to make updating easier. Creating multiple pages, publishing and embedding a calendar, YouTube video or map from Google will also be covered.

Once the class is done, participants can continue to update their websites on their own and use their own images to create a personalized site.

NORFOLK – The Allied Health Department at Northeast Community College in Norfolk will offer a pediatric advanced life support class in March.

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (HLTH 5510/18S & CRN #70277) will meet Wednesday and Thursday, March 14 and 15, from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., in the Nebraska Room at Faith Regional Health Services, 2700 W. Norfolk Ave.

This class will provide health care professionals with the knowledge to prevent and recognize cardiopulmonary arrest in infants and children. Participants will perform cognitive and psychomotor skills needed to resuscitate and stabilize infants and children in cardiopulmonary arrest.

This course has the following pre-requisites: a review of the manual and completion of the Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) pre-course online self-assessment test. Participants are asked to print their test score and bring it to class, along with a current Basic Life Support CPR card.

Cost of the class is $160. The textbook is available in the Hawks Shop, which is located in the Student Center on the Norfolk campus, (402) 844-7140.

NORFOLK – Northeast Community College in Norfolk will offer two, two-credit welding courses beginning in March.

Advanced Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) TIG (WELD 1994/18S & CRN #23761) will meet Wednesdays, March 14-May 9, from 6-9 p.m. in Room 101 of the Weller Building.

This lecture/lab course is designed to teach students about arc welding safety and Gas Tungsten Arc (GTAW-TIG) welding processes and power techniques for welding. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to perform general entry level production and maintenance welding on mild steel, stainless steel and aluminum thin gage material. The course does not include thick plate, pipe or other structural shapes.

Supplies needed include a helmet, welding cap, clear safety glasses, pliers, diagonal cutting pliers, welding coat, TIG gloves and a stainless steel wire brush.

Vern Hood is the instructor. Cost of the class is $227.

Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) Stick (WELD 1994/18S & CRN #24181) will meet on the same dates and times in the same location.

This lecture/lab course provides students with a technical understanding of arc welding, welding safety, power sources, electrode classification and selection. Welding will be done in all positions on mild steel carbon material, single and multiple pass, using mild steel, low hydrogen and iron power electrodes, with DC current. Depending on ability of the student, groove welds may also be performed as time permits. The course also provides an understanding of oxyacetylene cutting as well as safety practices in cutting.

Supplies needed are a helmet, welding cap, clear safety glasses, pliers, welding coat or leathers, cutting goggles and SMAW gloves. Chipping hammers and wire brushes are optional.

Cost of the class is $227.

NORFOLK -A new course for those interested in creating a positive workplace environment will be offered by Northeast Community College soon.

Engaging and Motivating Others (BSAD 5205/18S & CRN #70097) will meet Thursday, March 15, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Norfolk Area Chamber of Commerce, 609 W. Norfolk Ave., in Norfolk.

Employees who feel they are valued and recognized for their contributions are more motivated and productive at their jobs. In this program, participants will learn how to promote and grow a more dynamic, engaged and positive workforce.
