NDOT Reminds Everyone to Travel Safe this Thanksgiving

November 21, 2018 (Lincoln, Neb.) — The holiday season brings extra warmth to our homes, but

colder temperatures and winter weather can cause hazardous traveling conditions.  The

Nebraska Department of Transportation plans for the safety of our travelers by monitoring weather and

road conditions while actively communicating potential weather threats.  Although the forecast for much

of the state looks decent this Thanksgiving weekend, chances of rain and snow has NDOT staff standing

by to keep your journey safe.

“The holiday season is upon us, which means more vehicles on the roads as people travel to be with

friends and family,” said Kyle Schneweis, director of the Nebraska Department of Transportation.  “We

want everyone to arrive safe.  The NDOT and our partners work tirelessly to keep Nebraska’s roads

clear, and drivers can help as we work to provide the safest journey possible by preparing for and staying

engaged in the drive.”

No matter the forecast, NDOT will be ready to tackle whatever weather may appear.  Drivers are

encouraged to plan ahead, take their time and check conditions available through 511, Nebraska’s

Advanced Traveler Information System.  The system is available at all times via Nebraska 511’s
smartphone app, online at: www.511.nebraska.gov or by dialing 511 on your mobile device within

the state, or if dialing from a landline or outside Nebraska at 1-800-906-9069.

Still, weather isn’t the only safety factor drivers need to remember:

  • Stay Engaged: It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of trip; stay engaged and avoid

distractions.

  • Enjoy the Journey: Drive rested, take your time and enjoy the beauty of Nebraska.
  • Make a Plan: If the holidays bring too much cheer, ensure you have a plan that doesn’t involve

our law enforcement partners.

And remember, protect yourself and your loved ones.  Always buckle up.

Helpline is available 24 hours per day for motorists in need of assistance.  Drivers can reach NSP by

dialing *55 from any cell phone. Call 911 for any emergency.
