A group of state economic development officials took a tour of Gering and Scottsbluff Wednesday, getting a better idea of some of the existing and potential business development opportunities in our area.
Local economic development professionals were their guides, showing them spaces such as the former Lockwood building in Gering, and the old K-Mart and Albertson’s sitting empty in Scottsbluff.
Joe Fox, Director of Business Development for the Nebraska Department of Economic Development, tells KNEB News the information gained during on-site ‘familiarization’ tours helps as they deal with businesses looking for new opportunities…
“Specifically for business attraction to know what’s available, and offer them what value propositions are available in each community,” says Fox, “As well as the sites and facilities that if they’re looking at expanding and locating in Nebraska, what we have available for them.”
Scottsbluff Economic Development Director Starr Lehl pointed out there’s currently nothing that can be done with either the K-Mart or Albertson’s buildings, as the former is tied up in the Sears bankruptcy case, and the latter has an existing lease that won’t end until 2023.
