The Gering Volunteer Fire Department will have a new chief May 25th when Nathan Flowers, one of four current assistant chiefs with the department, will take over for Jay Templar, who is retiring after 50 years of service.
Flowers followed in the footsteps of his own father when he joined the department in 2000, and credits Templar with putting him in positions that allowed him to move up in the department and grow.
He says Jay was and continues to be a great mentor, allowing all assistant chiefs, lieutenants and captains to be able to move forward in their training. He also stresses Templar was big on training, and plans to continue that tradition.
Flowers says the success of the department can be attributed to Templar’s efforts in serving the citizens to the best of their ability and providing firefighters the tools and opportunities they need to learn and grow.
Flowers says he was appointed assistant chief by Templar about 5 years ago. He said he will officially begin his duties on May 26th and looks forward to a seamless transition, with everything staying basically as it is.
