More Classes to be held at Northeast’s West Point and Norfolk Campuses this month

More classes have been added for this month at Northeast Community College’s West Point and Norfolk Campuses. Class information can be found below:

 

WEST POINT – Two classes on basic woodworking will be offered by Northeast Community College in West Point in March.

Basic Woodworking – Rustic Wood Tray (CNST 5105/19S & CRN #70076) meets from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday, March 16, in Room 115 of the West Point Technical Center, 200 W. Washington Street.

In this course, participants will learn to assemble and create a rustic wood tray they can take home and use on a coffee table, ottoman or other surface. Graig McElmuray is the instructor.

Basic Woodworking – Build a Blanket Ladder (CNST 5105/19S & CRN #70083) will be held Saturday, March 30, from 1-4 p.m. in the same location.

Blanket ladders are a simple yet decorative way to keep quilts and throws easily accessible. In this class, participants will built their very own ladder-style blanket holders using wood and a few basic hand tools. Instructor Graig McElmuray will walk participants through the planning and construction stages and also demonstrate different types of finishes.

Supplies are included in the cost of both classes. Cost for each class is $45.

NORFOLK – The Allied Health Department at Northeast Community College in Norfolk will offer a pediatric advanced life support class in March.

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (HLTH 5510/19S & CRN #70409) will meet Tuesday and Wednesday, March 19 and 20, from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., at Faith Regional Health Services, 2700 W. Norfolk Ave.

This class will provide health care professionals with the knowledge to prevent and recognize cardiopulmonary arrest in infants and children. Participants will perform cognitive and psychomotor skills needed to resuscitate and stabilize infants and children in cardiopulmonary arrest.

This course has the following pre-requisites: a review of the manual and completion of the Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) pre-course online self-assessment test. Participants are asked to print their test score and bring it to class, along with a current Basic Life Support CPR card.

Cost of the class is $160. The textbook is available in the Hawks Shop, which is located in the Student Center on the Norfolk campus, (402) 844-7140.

WEST POINT – Northeast Community College in West Point will offer a class on furniture rehab, beginning soon.

Furniture Rehab will be offered twice. The first option (HOEC 5135/19S & CRN #70077) will meet Tuesdays, March 19, 26 and April 2, from 6-8 p.m. in Room 115 of the West Point Technical Center, 200 W. Washington St. The second option (HOEC 5135/19S & CRN #70086) will meet Wednesdays, April 10, 17 and 24, from 7-9 p.m. in the same location.

In this three-session class, participants will learn the basics of furniture painting, staining and/or distressing with Instructor Shelly Stark. Paint can transform a solid, well-constructed piece of furniture into something beautiful, on-trend and unique for very little money. No prior experience is required.

Students are asked to choose a furniture item and bring it with them to class. They are asked to call or text Stark at (402) 987-4203 for a list of required supplies. Stark can also provide information on where to find a quality, low-cost piece to work with, if needed.

Cost for the course is $65. Pre-registration is required.

NORFOLK – The Allied Health Department at Northeast Community College in Norfolk has announced two free, one-session workshops for emergency medical service technicians during the month of March.

The workshops are offered for three continuing education credits. They will be held from 7-10 p.m. All workshops will be conducted in local fire halls.

There is no need to pre-register. The workshops, dates and locations include:

NORFOLK – The Allied Health Division at Northeast Community College in Norfolk will offer a CPR Instructor Course beginning soon.

The course (HLTH 1720/19S & CRN #24593) will meet March 20-30 on Wednesdays from 6-10 p.m., and Saturdays, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Class is held in the Arlo Wirth building, Room 101, on the Northeast campus.

CPR instructor training for those currently qualified in basic life support. This one-credit course includes background materials, teaching techniques and aids to enable individuals to instruct others in the knowledge of local emergency care systems, understanding risk factors, signals and actions for survival, and recognition of indications for life support and accurate performance of the same.

Class participants must have a current AHA BLS CPR card. The required textbook is available at the Hawks Shop, which is located in the Student Center, (402) 844-7140.

Cost of the class, with Brock Soderberg the instructor, is $116.

NORFOLK –Three professional development courses will be offered by Northeast Community College soon.

Critical Thinking (BSAD 5110/19S & CRN #70193) will meet Wednesday, March 20, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Norfolk Area Chamber of Commerce, 609 W. Norfolk Ave., in Norfolk.

Critical thinking provides the skills to analyze and evaluate information so that the greatest amount of knowledge can be obtained from it. This workshop will provide participants with the skills to evaluate, identify and distinguish between relevant and irrelevant information. It will add purpose and intent to the problem solving process and provide a foundation to do so, all while leading to more productivity in careers and everyday life.

Cost of the course, with Elmer Miller the instructor, is $120.

Customer Service Excellence (BSAD 5150/19S & #70194) will meet Tuesday, March 26, from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. in the same location.

In today’s competitive environment, businesses can’t afford to stop gaining new customers; they must be relentless at retaining customers through excellent customer service. This seminar will teach basic customer service principles that anyone with customer contact can apply to increase customer satisfaction and retention.

Cost of the course, with Dan Kuester the instructor, is $120.

Conflict Management (BSAD 5130/19S & CRN #70196) will meet Tuesday, April 16, from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. in the same location.

Workplace conflict can significantly affect employee morale, turnover and litigation, which can in turn affect the prosperity of the company. This session will show leaders how to manage conflict and discuss the importance of doing so.

Cost of the course, with Instructor Debra Karr, is $120.

NORFOLK –Northeast Community College will offer an additional course option next month for those interested in learning the basics of motorcycle riding.

Motorcycle Rider Course (TRAN 5105/19S & CRN #70013/70014) will be offered Friday through Sunday, March 22-24. Hours on Friday will be 6:30-10 p.m.; Saturday, 7:50 a.m.-5:30 p.m., and Sunday 7:50 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Classes will be held in Room 102 in the Northeast Community College Utility Line building, just east of the main campus on Benjamin Avenue.

The class includes five hours of classroom instruction and ten hours of riding instruction. It begins with the basics, such as turning, shifting, and braking. Then it moves on to more advance street riding strategies. Professionally trained instructors teach in the classroom and then coach riders in a controlled riding area.

Within 30 days of the completing the course, students are required to take the MSF Basic eCourse. Details regarding this course will be sent to students after they register for the Motorcycle Rider Course. There is no additional cost for the mandatory eCourse.

Cost of the course, with Michael Holcomb, James Jones and Tom Broekemeier the instructors, is $250.
