A prospective buyer for the recently closed Mitchell grocery store likely needs to step up by the end of this year.
Lloyd Bairn, who owns the store with Josh Dykes, told KNEB News there are people who would like to see the store auctioned off in pieces But they would prefer it to sell as is and stay in the community.
Bairn says the store was struggling to make money and the area’s economy is “very tight and it got tighter with the railroad layoffs.”
Bairn says the last straw was the merger of the store’s food distributor Affiliated Foods with Associated Whole Grocers. The new company will be Associated Whole Grocers, and Bairn said without Sure Fine products and the required education of customers on the new brand, the two men felt it was time to close the store down.
