A 30-year-old Terrytown man who was convicted of stabbing his girlfriend in the head with an ice pick was sentenced Thursday to the maximum penalty for a Class IV Felony.
Thomas Mendoza was sentenced by Scotts Bluff County District Judge Leo Dobrovolny to three years in prison and 18 months of parole after his release from prison. Mendoza had pleaded guilty to second degree domestic assault.
The victim told officers when they responded to the incident this past May that Thomas Mendoza had been acting strangely all night and when they laid down to go to bed he produced an ice pick and attacked her. The victim was able to grab her infant child and get to her mother’s house.
Dobrovolny said while the victim fortunately did not suffer serious injuries, “There was a high risk of serious harm.” Dobrovolny also noted Mendoza had been in and out of jail for much of his life after 21 adult convictions for assaults, burglary, theft and drugs . The Judge said even though Mendoza always said the right things in court about wanting to change, which he did again Thursday, what had been tried previously had not been successful.
Mendoza maintained he was upset because he thought his girlfriend had not treated their young child properly.
