No tricks, just treats Wednesday as local veterans organizations held a special Halloween party for residents of the Western Nebraska State Veterans Home.
Halloween trivia and a staff costume contest were also part of the party sponsored by DAV Chapter 10, VFW Post 1681 and the VFW Auxiliary and attended by about 40 residents.
VFW Auxiliary President John Brehm Junior says the gathering is just one way to give back to those who have served the country by giving them something they can enjoy. “Some of them dress up themselves, I see a couple costumes in there. But it makes it more of a family atmosphere here in the home,” says Brehm. “The staff is involved with them and they’re involved with the staff, and when they interact with the dog and the staff, it means something to them.”
Veterans, loved ones and guests had plenty to smile about with songs and comedy provided by Clyde Massingill. “He doesn’t use any music, he doesn’t use any sheets, he does it all from memory, all the stories, all the things he does,” says Brehm, “and being he’s an (older) veteran, he’s always available when we call, he never says no. He likes to do it and we like to have him.”
Brehm says you could tell by the number of those in attendance that they enjoyed Massingill’s performance and the rest of the celebration.
