Leadership changes have been made at the Riverside Discovery Center.
Riverside Discovery Center Board President Martin Mickey confirmed Tuesday morning that Zoo Director Peter Halliday was let go by the board, and RDC Executive Director Anne James followed suit by resigning.
The changes occurred about a month ago, and while Mickey would not comment specifically on why Halliday was effectively fired, he indicated the board feels expectations needed to be raised. Mickey said the board feels they should be meeting AZA standards every day and not just during the time period prior to an inspection.
Mickey is also hoping new energy will bring people to the zoo that haven’t been there for awhile and promote more public involvement .
Mickey says the AZA is allowing the board to take their time getting replacement leadership, which he said would be an executive director and a curator or senior zookeeper. He says the board is finishing up the job description and then will do a nationwide search with the help of the AZA.
In the interim, Mickey says he and the board will operate the zoo and along with the zookeepers conduct Spooktacular next month.
