I-80 Temporarily Closed Near Aurora for DMS Installation

(Grand Island, Neb.) — Weather permitting, Watts Electric Company of Waverly, Nebraska, and the Nebraska Department of Roads (NDOR) are announcing that I-80, 1.5 miles east andwest of Aurora, is scheduled to be closed overnight, beginning at 10:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 7, and ending at 6:00 a.m. the following morning, for installation of two new Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) over I-80.

Traffic on eastbound I-80 west of Aurora will be reduced to one lane at approximately 9:30 p.m., followed by the closure of both lanes starting at 10:00 p.m. for an estimated three hours.  Upon completion of the work, westbound I-80 east of Aurora will be reduced to one lane for approximately 30 minutes, followed by the closure of both lanes for three hours.

During the closures, detours will be in place on US-34.  Motorists will be routed north to US-34 east and west of Aurora and back onto the interstate at Aurora.  Motorists can expect delays.

The $417,511 project is anticipated to be completed this fall.  The signs will help notify motorists of current traffic conditions, road work, and will be part of the State Patrol’s Amber Alert system.  The new signs will integrate with and be controlled by the NDOR Statewide Operations Center (SOC).

The Department of Roads’ manager for this project is Eric Klein of Grand Island.  Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously through construction zones.
