Gov. Pete Ricketts:

“Every year, Veterans Day provides an opportunity for Americans to come together and honor the men and women who have served in our armed forces.  This Veterans Day marks a special day in our country’s history: The 100th anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I.  Nearly 60,000 Nebraskans served in the war and 751 lost their lives in service to our state and our country.  Nebraska appreciates our veterans and we will continue to work for them.”

Nebraska State Capitol to Turn Green for Veterans Day

Weather permitting, the State Capitol will turn green this weekend for Veterans Day as a part of the “Greenlight A Vet” project.

According to project organizers, “Greenlight a Vet is a campaign to establish visible national support for our veterans by changing one light to green.  Green is the color of hope, renewal and well-being.  ‘Greenlight’ is also a term commonly used to activate forward movement.  The simple gesture of changing one light to green creates a beacon of support and appreciation, and a visible symbol of our commitment to ‘greenlight’ veterans forward as valued members of our communities.”

Outside lights that illuminate the State Capitol will be covered with green gels for Veterans Day.  More information is available at  http://www.greenlightavet.com/.

Veterans Day in 2018 is on Sunday, the 11th of November.

In the United States, Veterans Day is usually observed on November 11. However, if it occurs on a Sunday then the following Monday is designated for holiday leave, and if it occurs Saturday then either Saturday or Friday may be so designated.

In 2018, Veterans Day falls on a Sunday, so Monday, the 12th of November is considered a federal holiday.
