First State Bank’s multi-faceted Gift of Love Program is in full swing, and their annual Canned Food Challenge wrapped up today with volunteers going to area schools to pick up tons of food to go to local food pantries.

Crews were making stops today at Gering Junior High School, Community Christian School, as well as Lincoln Heights, Northfield, Roosevelt, Longfellow and Lincoln Elementary schools.

At Northfield Elementary in Gering this morning, First State Bank Marketing Director Becca Tompkins told KNEB News some of the food collected will help the Valley Christian Neighbors in Need finish out their holiday food baskets, which is part of the Gift of Love program. She says a lot of the food will also help the CAPWN food pantry and the Our Lady of Guadalupe Food Pantry to replenish their supplies.

Tompkins said they collected five tons of food last year and were on pace to collect that much again this year.

Tompkins says when it’s all added up, the elementary school that collects the most non-perishable food items will win a private screening of a holiday movie at the Midwest Theater for the entire school.
