The Gering city council Monday evening took another step toward locating a mid-summer collegiate baseball team in the community in 2018 when they approved a memorandum of understanding with the proposed Expedition League that outlines a facilities lease agreement for team owners.
Council Recreation Committee Chair Dan Smith says the document proposes a $350 a game lease arrangement for 32 games on the new field being builtat Oregon Trail Park. The city has already leveled the area where the field will be built with plans to construct the irrigation system and plant the grass field in the spring.
The city will maintain the field and the team will take care of the stands and the concession area. Smith says seating capacity is planned at between 1,000 to 1,500 seats with premium seating behind the dugout and bench seating elsewhere. The plan also calls for a “party deck” where alcohol will be served.
The ten team league will have two divisions with Gering in a division with North Platte, Casper, Hastings, and Rapid City. Smith says the league would like to have local ownership of the team, although if no one comes forward, outside interests would be available to fill the void.
Smith says the team is another effort to increase tourism dollars and bring out of town people to the area for a doubleheader or series while also creating a solid home field advantage with local attendance.
