The Gering council Monday evening approved cost of living hikes in the salaries for the Mayor and council members. The vote was 6-2 with Pam O’Neal and Don Christensen voting no.
Even though the total cost is only $1,500 annually, Christensen maintained residents could not afford the increases. But council members Larry Gibbs and Dan Smith said the increases were necessary to attract good people to run for the council and cover some of the individual costs, noting no one is serving on the council to “make a profit”.
Human Resource Director Tammy Cooley notes by resolution a change in salaries should be considered every four years. The approved proposal calls for the council members to receive $3,650 per year and the mayor to receive $6,800 per year.
The council also approved a proposal for the city of Gering to provide sanitation services to the Village of Lyman. The rates charged will be similar to what the city of Mitchell pays with an estimated 170 customers in Lyman provided service beginning February 1st.
