Full appellate court rejects Gage County bid for review

BEATRICE, Neb. (AP) _ A federal appeals court has denied Gage County’s request for further review of a $28.1 million judgment awarded to six people who were wrongfully convicted of murder.

The full 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected Gage County’s request Tuesday. A three-judge panel of the 8th Circuit court declined June 11 to overturn a jury’s 2016 verdict against the county and two former law enforcement officials.

The verdict was awarded to the Beatrice Six for their wrongful convictions in the 1985 rape and killing of 68-year-old Helen Wilson in Beatrice. They spent more than 75 years combined in prison until DNA evidence cleared them in 2008.

Officials have said the jury verdict could create major financial problems for rural Gage County, which collects about $8 million a year in taxes.
